As we enter the first quarter of 2025, I wanted to provide an update on where the business stands and our plans for growth in the coming year. Great Southern Cross Commodities (GSX) is now nearly two years old and has exceeded expectations in both its reach and the diversity of business it engages in.

Through my deep involvement in the Chapter 11 administration of Mercon Coffee, it has become clear that there is a need for an advisory firm focused on commodities within the restructuring and mergers & acquisitions sector of the industry. The knowledge gap between business owners, management, trade finance lenders, and investment banks is significant. Having worked with each of these groups over the years, I see a strong demand for an intermediary that can provide expert guidance in complex and challenging situations.

In 2025, GSX will focus on expanding this business through its proprietary network. Initially, we will continue to concentrate on soft commodities, particularly given the volatility in cocoa and coffee markets. Despite common assumptions, rapidly rising prices are often detrimental to trading companies. Why? Even if they were astute enough to be long in the market, they typically face losses due to supplier non-deliveries or consumer defaults when prices correct. Nearly all physical traders in soft commodity markets hedge their purchases with short futures positions. As futures prices climb, they are required to post additional collateral for both initial and variation margin, creating significant cash flow pressure.

Just ask a physical cocoa trader how their portfolio has fared since supply disruptions in 2023/24. Similarly, with the near-vertical rise in Arabica coffee prices leading up to the recent March delivery, physical coffee traders are also struggling with cash squeezes due to margin calls.

At GSX, I am building a team specializing in risk management, structured finance, and data analytics. This positions us strongly to advise commodity businesses seeking deeper market insights, improved business structuring, or ways for new entrants to capitalise on the unique arbitrage opportunities available.
